In what may be the most disgusting reaction to the Syrian refugee crisis – which is a feat, considering its competition – a U.S. website has stooped to new lows.
The Daily Caller, a conservative website founded by Fox News contributor Tucker Carlson, has published an article headlined " 13 Syrian Refugees We’d Take Immediately [PHOTOS] ."
The article, which is just a list of Instagram photos of what are undeniably attractive Syrian women, has set off a social media firestorm.
Aside from the crude objectification of women in life-threatening situations, Daily Caller entertainment editor Kaitlin Collins seems to have completely missed a key detail in putting together her list.
The women on her list are not Syrian refugees.
The images are all taken from an Instagram account called Syrian Girls . The account exists "to show the rest of world the beauty of our queens." Nowhere does it suggest that any of the featured women, who are all identified by name, are refugees.
Syria's prewar population was more than 22 million, and there are an estimated 4.5 million refugees who have fled. While there are millions more displaced internally, this still leaves millions of Syrians who are not displaced.
The Daily Caller is known for its shocking, click-bait style – but using a tragedy like the Syrian refugee crisis and pairing it with the idea that refugees should be judged based on their sex appeal to American men is unfathomable. Except, unfortunately, it actually happened.
