Lebanese-American actress Kathy Najimy wants women to wear hijab in to protest US President Donald Trump's Islamophobia. She's calling the movement "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Scarves".

Trump takes power on Friday, but on Saturday, activists, celebrities and ordinary citizens will hold massive demonstrations across the U.S. to protest the new president.

In addition to a slew of sexist, xenophobic and racist rhetoric, Trump has repeatedly referred to a widespread 'Muslim problem', sparking nearly unprecedented hate crimes against American-Muslims.

Najimy (best know for roles in Hocus Pocus and Sister Act) posted the statement to Facebook.

"We support every woman's right to worship as they wish and live in security and peace," she said.

"We intend to show that we stand in solidarity with our about-to-be-disenfranchised Muslim sisters."

Najimy was raised by Roman Catholic Lebanese-American parents. But she said that she is "not a religious person or a person who supports any particular religion."

"I believe in rights as a citizen, in American rights. And I believe, as the constitution says, the right to worship however you choose," she told People magazine.

"Simply stand for freedom. It’s easy," she said, explaining that wearing the headscarf doesn't mean endorsing or aligning "with ANY religious doctrine."

Trump has called for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. and for the creation of a Muslim registry.

The FBI released data last year that showed hate crimes against Muslims have increased by 67 percent in the U.S., a number only surpassed by the post-9/11 attacks period.
