UAE residents may soon be getting high-speed 5G internet!

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority revealed its plans during a seminar in Geneva organized by the International Telecommunications Union.

As the TRA plans to lead the Preparatory Meeting for World Radiocommunication Conference in 2019, the organization hopes to improve its infrastructure, and ultimately its offerings.

The TRA plans to allocate new bandwidth frequencies compatible with 5G networks all at much lower costs.

“The UAE’s leadership in telecommunications is central to the TRA’s strategic goals and we are working to achieve this through technical and infrastructure developments as well as strategic partnerships. Leading the Preparatory Meeting for WRC-19 is another testament of the country’s position globally as a trusted partner in telecommunications,” Khaled Al Awadhi, TRA spokesperson, said, according to Trade Arabia .

The TRA also emphasized the importance of using space services and using satellites to serve airlines with high-speed internet connections.

Currently, there are a few technical challenges that limit the implementation of high speed connection in-flight due to high cost and lack of the right capabilities.

"Emirati engineers are very much capable of contributing significant innovation in the space sector as we have seen them launch many projects under the sponsorship of technology firms and service providers," Al Awadhi added .
