On Friday, Lebanese authorities arrested actor, playwright and comedian Ziad Itani on charges of "collaborating and communicating" with Israel the past three years.

Itani, who rose to fame in 2013 after taking part in the comedy show "Tarik al-Jaddideh," has been accused of allegedly gathering information on political figures and aiding Israel in its assassination plots of current and former Lebanese officials.

Itani had plotted to assassinate Interior Minister Nohad Machnouk and monitored Abdul Rahim Mrad, a former minister, security sources said, according to Arab News.

The actor was detained on Thursday night "after several months of monitoring, follow-up and investigations within and outside Lebanon."

Itani confessed to the charges being held against him during an interrogation following the arrest, in which he admitted to executing tasks given to him by Israeli officials, according to LBC.

These include "monitoring a group of top political figures, providing [Israel] with extensive information on two prominent political figures[whose identities will be revealed at a later stage], working to establish a Lebanese group that paves the way for the normalization of relations with Israel, and providing them with reports on the reactions of the Lebanese people in light of the political developments that took place during the past two weeks in Lebanon."

Further investigations into the case will take place.
