More than 250,000 people are trapped in east Aleppo as bombardment continues. All hospitals have been shuttered so there are no facilities to treat the hundreds wounded

The city has been the victim of constant fighting throughout the Syrian conflict, and now the violence is coming to a head as the Syrian government and Russia try to crush rebels with a final blow. But civilians are trapped in the crossfires with no escape and now, no access to medical care.

And the fighting continues to wreak indescribable carnage.

“I don’t think in all my years of doing this I’ve seen such dreadful pictures of injuries, of people lying on the floor in an emergency room, the dead mixed with the living,” David Nott, a surgeon with decades of experience working in war zones, who is currently supporting doctors in Aleppo, told The Guardian.

But with all sides unwilling to cease the fighting, hope is looking grim. Syrian civilians and online supporters have turned to social media in desperate hope of raising awareness about the suffering.

1. The whole world has been watching and it still got to this point

2. Just imagine, really imagine the horror of this situation

3. Because no child should ever be born into this reality

4. The human cost is absurdly high

5. When this is a happy moment, you know something is terribly wrong

6. Schools are being bombed and children are dying

7. What is humanity doing to end the horror?

8. We need to work towards a world where pictures like this don't exist

9. Babies are dying in airstrikes

10. These children are the faces of Aleppo

11. And this should never be their daily reality

12. Sleep is the only temporary escape for many
