Meet the world's cheapest computer: Next Thing Co.'s open-source C.H.I.P. For 9 bucks a pop, it is pretty darn inexpensive.
The $35 Raspberry Pi 2, another micro-computer, has long been the darling of programmers thanks to its its affordability, processing skills and the fact that users could build their own computers, games, even robots.
C.H.I.P. is similarly customizable, but, for $9 programmers won't be getting a very powerful computer. Its stats include a 1 GHz Allwinner A13 processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal flash storage.
It also boasts a full-sized USB port, a Micro USB port, an audio jack with a microphone that doubles as a way to output video via a composite cable, built-in Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0.
Next Thing Co. is funding the project through Kickstarter and at the time of publishing had raised $126,027, nearly three times its $50,000 goal. There are still 29 days left to donate. The first computers are expected to ship in December.
