On Thursday, Syrian singer Faia Younan, who rose to fame in 2014 after a video of her singing for war-torn Arab countries went viral, caused quite the stir on social media.
This time, it wasn't for a new viral hit song, but for refusing to take a selfie with a fan who took to the stage during a live performance in Aleppo.
In a video capturing the awkward moment, a fan is seen walking towards Faia, who was standing center stage.
When he asked her for a selfie, the singer simply turned her head to the other side and said: "Everyone will want one now."
Within seconds, two security guards were seen escorting the fan off the stage.
A video of the incident went completely viral, sparking controversy...
It led many to leave extremely offensive comments under the singer's posts on Facebook, accusing her of being "stuck up" and "disrespectful."
However, many others defended her, explaining that she might have been adhering to security regulations.
Fans are quite upset
"Just so that you know, she thinks what she did was cute."
"What was she thinking when she did that?"
Many think there were more appropriate ways to deal with the situation
"Her behavior is so disrespectful. She could've kindly asked her fans not to come on stage and explained that she'll take photos with them after the performance. Humiliating this guy and laughing the way she did was absolutely uncalled for."
A few are making comparisons
"Stardom is about humanity and humility above anything else"
But not everyone is taking a stand against the talented young singer
"Faia, thank you for being pure-hearted. Thank you for being adamant on respecting the stage at a time when others nearly made us forget its sanctity. And thank you for being so determined to create dignified works of art."
Many are also defending her
"I don't understand this backlash, she didn't do anything wrong. It's clear this was a joke."
"Beautiful Faia, you're being attacked simply because you're successful"
Younan has since responded
In a public post she shared on her personal Facebook account early on Friday, Younan responded to the controversy.
"In regards to what happened at yesterday's concert, I was just trying to send a message that it's unacceptable for people to come on stage during a live performance and I tried to get that through by simply joking with the fan who came on stage," she wrote.
"If I had taken a selfie with one fan, other people would have then wanted to come on stage and that would have disrupted the live performance and been disrespectful to the musicians playing on stage with me and to the audience," she added.
Younan stressed that her move was well intended and was not meant to hurt or disrespect anyone at all.
"The fan, Hamada, went back to his seat and enjoyed the rest of the concert. Neither did he nor any of the people attending the show make a big deal out of it and I took photos with several fans after my performance," she explained.
In her statement on the matter, the talented young singer apologized to her loving fans, thanking all those who support her.
She also responded to haters saying: "Let love grow inside of you, maybe then you'll find success."
