After much speculation on the identity of the owner of a white Mercedes with a Saudi license plate spotted in Tel Aviv's Clock Tower, Makkah newspaper solved the mystery.
According to Gulf News, the Saudi daily tracked down the owner of the car who turned out to be an American in his 70s working as a technical consultant in Saudi Arabia. Makkah didn't name the expat despite surfacing conflicting reports over the man's identity.
The expat told Makkah that he was vacationing in Israel. His papers were checked four times by the Israeli police because of the license plates.
And in case you were wondering – no, Saudi Arabia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel. In fact, Saudi Arabia Airlines has recently cancelled a contract with Portuguese Hi Fly for taking an off-duty A33-300 jet to Ben Gurion International Airport for maintenance. According to the airline, this constituted a "clear violation" because the leasing company had not obtained written approval mentioning the airports where it could land or undergo maintenance procedure.
