Saudi Arabia's King Salman fired one of his most senior aides, Mohamed al-Tabishi, after he appeared to slap a journalist on live TV.
Did you miss it? We did at first too, but watch closely at 12 seconds, and it definitely looks like Tabishi slapped someone – we think.
Ironically, Tabishi was the head of royal protocol. Maybe he missed the part about not slapping people on camera?
The incident was caught on camera, when the king was greeting Morocco's King Mohammed at Riyadh airport Sunday. The slapped reporter was Moroccan as well. So much for a welcoming committee.
Although KSA did not publicly disclose the reasoning behind the sacking, Saudis on social media are praising the king for his decision. The video had been widely critizied, with many saying that Tabishi was abusing his power.
Despite having little more than 100 days on the throne, some media are saying that the king has shown a decisiveness when dealing with his team's relations with the media. Last month, he banned Prince Mamdouh bin Abdul Rahman from taking part in sports activities and speaking with the media after he made remarks that were considered racist on a TV talk show. He also replaced his health minister, Ahmed Al-Khatib, after he was filmed having a heated argument.
While we are not going to extrapolate what the first 100 days of King Salman's rule means for the rest of his time on the throne, we will say to his staff and family: Stay off camera.
