U.S. President Donald Trump might keep us entertained on Twitter, but Saudi Arabia's King Salman has officially been crowned king of the social media platform.

The "Twiplomacy" study has named King Salman as "The Most Effective World Leader for 2017," as his tweets generate the most retweets among world leaders, beating President Trump who landed in second place.

The annual report, which studies the activity of popular world leaders on major social media platforms, was published by the New York-based international communications firm Burson-Marsteller.

The "Twiplomacy" study takes the number of retweets as a measure of effectiveness and regards Twitter as a "diplomatic barometer" that gauges international relations.

King Salman only tweeted ten times during the period covered by the study - April 2016 until May 20, 2017.

With a whopping 147,456 retweets per tweet on average, the Saudi king is without contest the most effective world leader on Twitter, overshadowing Trump whose tweets average 13,094 retweets.

"He [King Salman] posts exclusively in Arabic and without any visuals," the report stated. "But every tweet is a digital home run."

In terms of followers, however, Trump leads King Salman with 31.2 million followers versus 6.23 million, respectively.

Last year's "Twiplomacy" report ranked King Salman as the second most influential world leader on Twitter with an average of 12,000 retweets per tweet, following former U.S. President Barack Obama.

The Saudi monarch has reigned over the Islamic kingdom since 2015, following the death of his half-brother King Abdullah. He had previously served as the governor of Riyadh for 48 years.

Last December, Forbes placed him among the 50 most powerful people in the world for 2016, ranking him as the most powerful person in the Middle East and the Arab world.

In the Arab world, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, is the most followed Arab leader with 7.9 million followers, ahead of Jordan's Queen Rania Al Abdullah and King Salman.

Queen Rania is actually the second-most followed female world leader after India's Foreign Minister.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry has the fifth highest number of followers among foreign ministries in the world.
