Authorities in the United States have blamed a May 2014 plane crash in Colorado on the pilot taking a selfie, in an official report issued this month.

A report was released last week saying that the pilot and passenger, both of whom were killed in the crash, were taking selfies with a camera phone during flight takeoff, initial climb and during the flight itself. A GoPro camera was found in the wreckage and showed that the two were using the cameras' flashes during the night flight.

"It is likely that cell phone use during the accident flight distracted the pilot and contributed to the development of spatial disorientation and subsequent loss of control," the report said. This is the first time that a selfie was to blame for a plane crash.

Some citizens took to Twitter to make tongue-in-cheek public service announcements.

The findings come just two months after an investigation found questionable use of Instagram by pilots .

With all of the aviation disasters in the news, it's obvious that this selfie flow chart should be in the cockpit.
