For years and years, the Western media has been notoriously known for using white characters to portray "minority" groups because, well, "white-washing." The criticism the Hollywood industry has faced because of white-washing has stirred up a bunch of other controversies including the recent #OscarsSoWhite and the ever-growing demand for Muslim models  because companies want to prove to be as diverse as possible to avoid criticism at all costs.

Companies and institutions talk about diversity and how they love diversity, when in reality they just lack true diversity altogether. That's where Palestinian Arwa Mahdawi  comes in.

Half-Palestinian half-English, Mahdawi decided to create a her own on-demand (satirical) business, Rent A Minority, offering institutions a "fake" platform where they can hire minorities when they're short of and afraid of being called out for not being diverse enough. She tells BBC trending that she was "tired of seeing companies making superficial gestures to promote diversity" and decided to draw attention to the inequality present in almost all institutions nowadays.

Rent A Minority ensures that all the listed minorities are not “too black” or “too Muslim” or “too much of a Feminist.” Basically, if you're looking for an "ethnically ambiguous minority" this site has got your back.

Obviously, the website is a spoof aimed at raising awareness around the true lack of diversity that institutions all suffer from nowadays. When companies decide to take initiative to be diverse, they always make sure the so-called "minority" they're hiring isn't too much of anything, which kills the true meaning of the word "diverse."
