Despite our love for the city, Beirut clearly suffers from a transportation problem, and we are worried for the future. Nevertheless, Nabil Nakkach, a Lebanese transportation systems engineer, recently released his findings on transportation in Beirut.
Nakkach draws upon a plan the USSR came up with in 1968 to establish the Beirut Metro, but with lack of available information in this field, he depicts the most important one: the 1995 Greater Beirut Transportation Plan. It included the forecasting of transportation demand in the Greater Beirut area for two decades, along with a superb goal to revitalize the war-torn city back then. The plan was devised without any implementation.
Nakkach describes the vitality of this plan, and how the future from today foresees the inability of the city's infrastructure to handle transporting millions of Beirutis over the years.
The full post, which includes the plan's details and hopeful metro plans, can be read on Nakkach's Linkedin blog .
We hope this study becomes actionable very soon!
