Lebanon's Amel Association nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Amel Association, a non-profit, non-sectarian organization supporting underprivileged populations in Lebanon, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Amel Association, a Lebanese non-profit, non-sectarian organization supporting underprivileged populations in Lebanon, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize .

Founded in 1979 by Kamel Mohanna, the NGO helps underprivileged segments of society with various programs including healthcare, psycho-social support, rural development, vocational training, child protection and the promotion of human rights.

Amel currently operates 24 medical centers and 6 mobile medical units in various parts of Lebanon including the Bekaa Valley, South Lebanon, Mount Lebanon, and the southern suburbs of Beirut.

There are 376 candidates in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, of which 228 are individuals and 148 are organizations. The number of candidates in 2016 is by far the highest ever. The previous record, 278 candidates, was set in 2014.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced Oct. 7.
