Mohamed Salah has responded with shock to reports that he was planning to leave the World Cup early and not compete in Egypt's final match against Saudi Arabia.
"He is happy to mingle with his teammates and he was shocked by what the press has written about him and denied it all on social media," Egyptian Football Association president Hany Abo Rida said, ESPN reported Friday.
"We're all perplexed by what has been published and have no idea where it came from."
Salah also posted a note to Twitter earlier this week, appearing to distance himself from the rumors.
"Everyone in Egypt is together and there is absolutely no disagreement between us. We respect each other and the relationship is great," the Egyptian football star wrote.
Media reports came this week suggesting Salah was unhappy with his team and would leave early. The Egyptian team has lost both its games in the World Cup taking place in Russia.
In its first game versus Uruguay, Egypt lost 1-0, with Salah remaining on the sidelines as he continued to recover from an injury from the Champions League final. Playing in the team's next game versus host Russia, Salah scored one goal, but Egypt lost 3-1.
Although Egypt has already been disqualified from continuing to the tournament's next round. It has one more group game against Saudi Arabia to be played on Monday. Reports suggested that Salah would head home early to avoid the match.
"We have our captain Mohamed Salah and under the rules FIFA requires him to be inside his camp and requires him to stay with his team," Abo Rida said, responding to the rumors.
