Lebanese people just love to celebrate.
From showing support to your favorite football team to congratulating a cousin for passing the brevet, to going crazy because bint el jeeran is getting married... there's not one single person who hasn't been a part of these celebrations.
These are 6 things that happen during any celebratory occasion in Lebanon:
1. Fireworks
This isn't just like one packet of fireworks. It's more like 100,000 packs of fireworks in the middle of the night, even if the whole neighborhood is sleeping, or in the middle of the day, even when they aren't visible. It's like fireworks are just available in every person's home just in case some celebration comes up. Always be prepared.
2. Zalghouta
There's always that one person in the family who has perfected this skill. It just has to happen.
3. Honking
This is pretty common when football teams win/lose/draw... and when a bride and groom are on their way to get hitched. Because let's face it, it's not a true happy moment until the entire country knows about it.
Warning: Do not drive when this happens. I'm telling you, you will regret it.
4. Kissing and hugging each other
ALWAYS happens. Whether it's someone's birthday, graduation, wedding, whatever the occasion, kissing and hugging is a must. And there's no escaping the awkward moment when you don't know how many kisses to lean in for...
5. Cutting cake with "Happy Birthday" background music... even if it's nobody's birthday
I don't know why but the birthday is considered one of the happiest and most important celebrations in a Lebanese family. Yaani even if it's not your birthday, you somehow hear the happy birthday theme song creeping up silently in the background. And of course, cutting cake with a knife flipped upside down.
6. Gun shots
The worst one of all. Really. Like why?
