Hiking and camping is a major trend among UAE expats, especially during the cool months of the year. More and more people are discovering new hiking trails that offer the chance to escape the concrete jungle that is Dubai and the infamous traffic of Abu Dhabi.

One of the most popular trails at the moment is the Wadi Shawka trail in Ras Al Khaimah. This is in large part due to its accessibility, beautiful scenery and somewhat challenging route.

So, instead of planning yet another beach weekend, why not try something more adventurous and venture out to the Shawka trail? Here’s what you need to know:

1. How to get there

The trail is 143 KM away from Dubai. You don’t need a 4X4 to get there, but that's only if you're planning not to drive further inside. The track can easily be found on GPS, just type “Shawka Dam” and you’ll find it.

2. Once you get there

There isn’t much around the area of the trail. There is a tiny shop at the entrance where you can buy some refreshments. Otherwise, make sure you have everything packed with you before you head there.

3. It is a beautiful natural sight

You’ll be surrounded by hills and small mountains form all sides - a sight you don’t get to see every day in the UAE. There are also lonesome palm trees scattered around the narrow pebbly paths, small ponds, and natural springs that are full of water all year long. Your Instagram feed will thank you!

4. Wildlife encounter

Prepare for some wildlife company while camping/hiking in Shawka trail! It’s very common to encounter camels, goats, donkeys and lots of birds. It’s also common to take a selfie with them, who can blame you?

5. It’s a great spot for off-roading

Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate Shawka trail thanks to its hills, wadis (valleys) and rock formations which are ideal for a fun adventure on board an ATV or by 4x4. The best thing about this place is that it’s mostly isolated, which means you can rev your engine and drive around uninterrupted!

6. 10 KM of a great workout

Whether you choose to hike, cycle, run or just walk, you have 10KM of somewhat challenging terrain at the Shawka dam loop. Don’t forget that there is nothing around you so make sure you have enough water and snacks. There is also hardly any shade so sunscreen lotion and a hat are a must!

7. It’s also great for camping

Especially the wide wadi area near the dam where there is a pond and a tranquil green area. It’s so quiet and calm there you’ll forget you are in the UAE! The sunset and sunrise are also not to be missed while camping there.

8. It’s perfect for a change of scenery without traveling far

Many of us who live in the UAE complain about the lack of activities you can do outside of malls, hotels and restaurants. This is why a visit to Shawka trail is a welcome and affordable change that is just a couple of hours away!

9. It’s an opportunity to see another side of the UAE

Discover little villages on the road, exchange “As-Salaam-Alaikums” with local shepherds, enjoy the absolute silence away from the city buzz. You can do all these things there while discovering a new side to the UAE you may have never experienced before!

10. Lastly … the bathroom situation

Don't worry, your natural instincts will kick in eventually!
