Egyptian-American Rami Malek scooped up an Emmy last week for his lead role in the psychological drama Mr. Robot in 2015. Now he's the talk of the town for everything from his class act performances to his impact on American race relations. But it was a long road to here, and there are clear indications from some of his roles (a suicide bomber in the series 24, and a Pharaoh in Night at the Museum) that he had his fair share of racial pigeon holing.

You may not have realized it, but you've probably seen Rami in action from way before Rami Malek became Emmy-award winner Rami Malek.

Malek's first claim to fame was at "Night at the Museum" in 2006 ... where he was none other than an Egyptian Pharaoh. It's perhaps an indication that Hollywood may have had a bit of a hard time seeing past Rami's Egyptiannness.

2. Larry Crowne (2011)

Malek took the role of Steve Dibiasi in Larry Crowne, a romantic comedy film starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts about a man who unexpectedly loses his job, allowing him to re-invent himself by going back to college.

Taking on the role of Benjamin, Malek was definitely the right choice for the member of the Egyptian coven.

5. The Master (2012)

Malek was cast as Clark, an ardent believer in a religious movement known as The Cause. The film is a psychological drama featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams, depicting the story of a World War II veteran struggling to adjust to a post-war society.

6. Short Term 12 (2013)

Malek played Nate in the 2013 film, Short Term 12, a drama film centered on a group of troubled teenagers in a residential treatment facility.

7. Need for Speed (2014)

Malek played Finn in this action film based on the multi-million game franchise. Malek was cast among others including the Breaking Bad star, Aaron Paul who played the role of a street racer who sets off to race cross-country.

He's also appeared in several TV series over the years:

Another indication that Hollywood had trouble breaking out of stereotypes, in the action series 24, Rami was cast as a suicide bomber.
