For those of us who feel personally victimized by capitalism, the privileges enjoyed by the top one percent often get us wondering how an infinitesimal portion of their wealth could turn our lives around.
One Egyptian high school student knows this all too well.
Struggling to finance a university degree in the field he is passionate about, Omar Soliman decided to test his luck with Egypt's billionaire businessman Naguib Sawiris ... and he hit the jackpot.
Soliman secured a scholarship with just one tweet
Soliman, who has been coding since childhood, took to Twitter to ask Sawiris for a scholarship that would allow him to pursue an undergraduate degree in computer science at Nile University. The high school student explained that without a scholarship, he would have to study commerce, which he is not fond of.
The tweet, which was sent to Sawiris on Tuesday, read:
"@NaguibSawiris How about you offer a struggling high school student like me a scholarship to study computer science at Nile University? Or do I trust God and study commerce?"
In another tweet, Soliman explained to a fellow Twitter user that he is facing "psychological and financial difficulties," adding that he would prefer not to pursue a degree in a field he is not interested in.
Sawiris responded less than 30 minutes later
"That is feasible, send me your phone number," Sawiris, who belongs to Egypt's wealthiest family, replied.
Speaking to StepFeed, Soliman confirmed that the businessman has offered to cover his tuition fees at Nile University, adding that he did not expect such a response.
Soliman expressed his gratitude to Sawiris on Twitter, writing, "I'm very grateful and thankful to you until the last breath in my life!"
In response to a Twitter user who wrote, "It would be great if he follows through with his promise," Sawiris tweeted, "There's no such thing as 'if he follows through.' He is always honest."
Other tweeps tried to hop on the bandwagon
"My name is also Omar Soliman and I'm a 12th grader as well," another Twitter user wrote, to which Sawiris responded:
"Okay so graduate and achieve good grades, then choose the university you want to attend. Best of luck."
Who is Naguib Sawiris?
With a net worth amounting to $2.9 billion, Sawiris is considered the fifth richest Arab, according to Forbes. His brother, Nassif Sawiris, is the richest person in the Arab world, with his net worth totaling $6.4 billion.
Naguib Sawiris built a fortune in telecommunications, selling Orascom Telecom in 2011 to Russian telecom firm VimpelCom (now Veon) in a multibillion-dollar transaction. The mechanical engineering graduate also owns stakes in gold mines through his Luxembourg-based company, La Mancha Resources.
