EgyptAir will launch its first biofuel plane in the coming year and intends to transition away from traditional jet fuel, according to the Civil Aviation Minister.

Minister Hossam Kamal told students at the Engineering Institute of Aviation and Technology graduation ceremony of the flagship carrier's plans, according to Egypt Independent.

A collaboration between the the Institute of Aviation and Techonology, National Research Center in Egypt, the engine factory of the Arab Organization for Industrialization, petroleum research centers and Egyptian petroleum companies, successfully produced biofuel samples.

The Misr Petroleum Research Institute has tested and approved the fuel, with Egypt estimated to be able to produce up to 30 tons of it daily.

The minister did not say how much the biofuel production would cost, however, studies have shown it to be prohibitively expensive when used in other countries.
