Eight kilograms and 14 bars of gold were stolen Thursday night from Egypt's coinage department. How it happened? The Ministry of Finance said that the thieves knew that the surveillance cameras were switched off at night.
What? Why you would turn off all CCTV cameras at night is unclear.
Prosecution ordered the arrest of the custodian in charge of the coinage department under suspension of negligence and embezzlement.
However, that did not keep the Egyptian public from poking fun at the entire situation along with the mind baffling negligence of people in charge and thus, the " because cameras don't work at night " Twitter hashtag was born and it quickly became a popular trending topic Friday morning in Egypt and the Middle East.
Here are a few tweets on why people think surveillance cameras don't work at night
"Because the cameras are committed to regular working hours."
"Because the cameras have an election coming up."
"Because the cameras can't stay up late at night."
"Because the cameras going through a laugh patch."
"Because the cameras are protesting the new labor law."
"Because cameras asked God for forgiveness and can no longer sin."
"Because cameras work regular hours and take Fridays and Saturdays off."
"Because the cameras' director wanted them off."
"Because the thieves may want to sleep."
"Because cameras need a good night's sleep."
"Because cameras have more important things to take care of."
Suffice to say, the Finance Ministry has a major PR problem on its hands.
