At least 58 people were killed and dozens have been wounded in a suspected chemical attack that hit the northwestern province of Idlib, Syria on Tuesday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that strikes on Khan Sheikhoun, located some 50km south of rebel-held Idlib, by Syrian government or Russian jets had caused many people to choke, the BBC said.

A Syrian military source strongly denied the army had used any such weapons, according to Reuters. Similarly, the Russian Defense Ministry said none of their jets carried out airstrikes in the area of Khan Sheikhoun Tuesday, according to a ministry statement carried by state-run TASS, CNN reported.

United Nations war crimes investigators said they were "looking into an alleged chemical weapons attack on a Syrian town in Idlib as well as reports of a subsequent attack on a medical facility where injured people were being treated," Reuters added.

"It is imperative for perpetrators of such attacks to be identified and held accountable," the independent panel led by Brazilian expert Paulo Pinheiro said. The use of chemical weapons as well as any deliberate targeting of medical facilities "would amount to war crimes and serious violations of human rights law," the U.N. Commission of Inquiry on Syria continued.

Many expressed their outrage

"Everyone rushes to condemn explosions in Moscow, London and Paris, while fragments of our bodies are scattered everywhere here and no one makes a sound."

"A horrible scene, murder of innocent people and chemical attacks on children in Idlib. God is with you innocent souls, we belong to God and to him we return, unfortunately humanity no longer exists."

"The world does not want a resolution that ends tragedy for Syrians but is working towards exasperating it --what happened in Idlib today is proof. The whole world is conspiring against Syria and its people."

"Bombardments continue, death continues, a few statements here and there and nothing will change..."

While others thought up conspiracy theories

"The Idlib massacre quickly led to political accusations because the criminals behind the attack want to use it for their benefit, this is a clear intelligence service operation."

And some spoke of what truly matters amidst the conflict

"Every single time I imagine that own my daughter, who plays and laughs with me could be one of the victims in Iraq or Syria, and then hear people say that speaking out about Idlib is extremist, I feel frustrated."
