Arab weddings are often lavish affairs, but this one might just top them all.
The deputy mayor of Auburn, Australia, Salim Mehajer, whose father was born in Lebanon, just hosted a massive wedding on Saturday, which included four helicopters, a fighter jet flyover, sports cars worth $50 million, a sea-plane and a performance by Australian Recording Industry Association award-winning songstress Missy Higgins.
The lavish affair may have been enjoyable for the 1,000 guests in attendance but Auburn residents were less than impressed. A leaflet was distributed on Friday informing residents that Frances Street would be closed and any cars left on the road would be towed at the owner's expense. However, the notice was not actually approved by the city council.
Additionally, police sources also stated they were never even informed that the wedding would be taking place. When questioned about their presence along the "closed" street they explained they were responding to crowd control needs only.
"We were never told, and as you can see it’s out of control," Inspector Chris Laird said, according to 9News.
"We’ll be asking regional command to send the family the bill."
Now local residents are calling for the removal of Mehajer from office. An online petition has been started and has garnered 7,305 signatures at the time of writing. Additionally a Facebook page titled "Sack Salim Mehajer" has garnered over 1,700 likes.
The hashtag #SackSalimMehajer has started trending on Twitter as well.
And Mehajer's response to the conflict?
On social media he posted, "To all the haters, keep hating. I work hard. 100% legit," according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
During the wedding, Mehajer rather bizarrely said "This is how you do a wedding."
"Floyd Mayweather, you've got no chance on me motherf---er," in a reference to the boxing world champion that often posts pictures of his lavish lifestyle on social media.
We're sure Mayweather feels quite threatened, quite threatened indeed.
Notably, Mehajer delayed the wedding as his father finished out a prison sentence for conspiring to defraud the National Australia Bank out of more than $3 million. Mehajer was previously convicted of negligent driving after ploughing over two women with his Ferrari, however he got off on appeal.
