Lebanese-Armenian Eileen Katchadourian is no stranger to the spotlight, after recently being named Armenia's " Best Female Performer of the Diaspora," as well as being a mainstay of the Beirut electronic scene. And now, it seems that Katchadourian is making waves again, as her new album, "Titernig,” is being released this week.
After receiving some critical acclaim for her debut album "Midan", which was a mixture of traditional Armenian songs and alternative rock, the singer-songwriter spent six years working on her follow-up album. To say it was widely anticipated would be an understatement. Inspired by both the Armenian genocide, which her grandparents survived, as well as the Lebanese Civil War, which she lived through, this new album focuses on rebirth .
"Titernig” is literally translated as “Butterfly” in Armenian and is a reference to a quote from Haruki Murakami’s “1Q84":
“Butterflies are truly the most elegant of living creatures and the most ephemeral. They’re born nowhere; their quest is peaceful and very limited, and they disappear into nowhere, imperceptibly. Possibly into another world.”
Singing in Armenian, the electronic rock is hauntingly beautiful and as etheral as the album's name. You can listen to several of the tracks from the album on Soundcloud below. CDs are available for order here and the full album will be released on iTunes soon.
