Red Bull athlete David Lama entered uncharted territory with his recent climb of Baatara Gorge in Tannourine, Lebanon.

The touristic landmark is a popular summer destination for hikers because of the picturesque waterfall that drops through the impressive sinkhole.

As Lebanon's climbing community is only just developing, Lama was the first to ever climb the gorge and had to set a new route with the climb, graded at 5.14d.

Speaking about why he chose Lebanon, Lama said, "If you get to travel roads that have already been discovered, you’re basically just following. But if you go somewhere no one has ever been you’re basically in the lead and that’s something I really like," according to Red Bull.

"Lebanon is definitely a special place, it’s somehow a little bit exotic, a place that you don’t actually plan to go to as a climber, as it’s not really on the climbing map, and that’s one factor that drove me to come here."

However, the climb wasn't easy and Lama had his doubts about whether it would even be possible.

"To find a climbable line in this cave, in this sinkhole, was really hard. I really had my doubts. The walls are incredibly steep and there are hardly any holds on it, so I was unsure there was a line I could free climb," he said.

In the end, he persevered and did what nobody had done before while showcasing one of the most beautiful landmarks in Lebanon.
