In Alexandria, Egypt, disaster hit when attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest lines of tables. Utter chaos took over the streets after people waited for hours on end to break their fast.
The event was sponsored by the Alexandria Governate in an attempt to boost tourism. Long lines of tables, known as Mawaed Al-Rahman (Arabic for "Tables of the Most Gracious"), are often set out in Egypt during the month of Ramadan to provide food for the poor.
Due to the terrible planning of the event, organizers decided to make it exclusive and requested that people register online to attend. But then the governor of Alexandria, Hani El Messiery, showed up and decided to open it to the public at the last minute. Shockingly, the last-minute change turned the event into complete mayhem .
And if that wasn't enough to infuriate starved attendees, food was stolen from trucks and many had to wait for hours to eat and drink.
This particular Maedet Al-Rahman was a complete mess. Nevertheless, Egypt did break the Guinness World Record for the longest line of tables with 3,106 tables setup along 4,303 meters of the coast of Alexandria.
Not a total loss I'd say.
