Donning keffiyehs, niqabs, thawbs and hijabs has become the trend among Western celebrities when they visit the Arab world.
Orientalism? Cultural appropriation? Perhaps. Some of these celebrities have been called out for those very reasons.
But regardless, here are 8 celebrities who tried to be Arab ... sometimes stirring controversy.
1. Zac Efron rocked a keffiyeh while visiting Dubai's desert
American actor Zac Efron was recently in Dubai as part of a campaign with Hugo Boss. But he also took some time to explore the emirate's desert, showing one of his biceps in selfie, while wearing a traditional Emirati keffiyeh.
2. Khloe Kardashian wore niqab in Dubai
The UAE and the Kardashians may share a mutual love for each other, but that doesn't mean they've always agreed 100 percent.
Khloe Kardashian drew backlash after she shared a photo of herself wearing a niqab during a visit to Dubai with the caption: "Habibi love."
She was accused of "cultural appropriation," with many saying her decision to wear the garment was disrespectful to the religion.
3. Will Smith got his Moroccan on in Marrakech
Egypt and Morocco went a little crazy earlier this year when American superstar actor and hip-hop artist Will Smith passed by for some tourism. While in Morocco, Smith showed off his stylish swag, donning some colorful local fashion.
4. Rihanna stirred controversy with these hijab photos in Abu Dhabi
Rihanna visited Abu Dhabi's breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Mosque in 2013, sporting a conservative outfit including a black hijab. But, when she proceeded to do a sultry photo-shoot, the mosque officials kindly asked her to leave.
"In the event of behavior that violates the moral codes of access to the mosque, or other visit regulations – such as taking inappropriate pictures, posing in ways that are improper in the context of sacred place, talking loudly, or eating – the violators are directed in a polite manner that reflects the civilisational and tolerant attributes of Islam [sic]," the mosque's management said in a statement after the incident.

6. Ricky Martin rocked a thawb in Doha
Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin visited Qatar in late 2015 and decided to try on some traditional clothing. He rocked a stylish white thawb when visiting the Doha's iconic Museum of Islamic Art.
7. Madonna also wore a niqab
The iconic pop star Madonna also donned the niqab in an Instagram post in 2014. She shared the image with the caption: "Its that kind of day!" and the hashtag #unapologeticbitch.
Not everyone was amused.
