So, you just landed in Doha and you have one of those long 10-to-12 hour layovers. Although the airport is one of the nicest in the world, when you have that much time on your hands, you might as well go out and experience the city.
Well, I've been there, done that. Here's my advice on what to do with your time, unless your layover is overnight, in which case, enjoy the free wifi?
1. Head straight to the Museum of Islamic Art
It's been selected as one of the best museums in the world and the building's impressive architecture has made it an iconic landmark. You'll need at least a couple hours for this considering transport time and doing a quick run-through tour.
2. Walk along the famous Doha corniche to Souq Waqif
From the museum, take a leisurely walk toward Souq Waqif. It will take you around 20 to 30 minutes and you can snap some great shots of Doha's skyline and dhows along the way.
3. Enjoy lunch and shisha in the souq
Spend some time wandering around the traditional souq. Maybe you'll even find some souvenirs to take home to friends. After you see the wares, find one of the numerous restaurants and cafes to have a quick bite while enjoying the local shisha.
4. Now its time to enjoy Venice in the middle of the desert
It's time to do some shopping – or at least window shopping – at Villaggio Qatar. Enjoy the Venice-inspired architecture. You can even catch a gondola ride if you'd like. Just don't lose track of time.
5. Alright, if you still have time, lets make one last stop at Mathaf.
Not to be confused with the Museum of Islamic Art, Mathaf or the Arab Museum of Modern Art is an outstanding museum as well. Featuring some of the best regional modern art, its definitely worth at least a quick visit.
Just keep in mind that you should be back at the airport in ample time to make your connection. The trip from Mathaf to Hamad International Airport will take just over an hour. With your bags already checked, you might not need two hours but don't cut it too short! Otherwise, relax and enjoy your layover.
