It's noon Sunday, and you're debating whether to stay in bed for the day or attempt to be a person and do something before your weekend evaporates entirely. Know the feeling?
Get out of bed!
1. Pick a new neighborhood and explore
It's often very easy for us to get stuck in the neighborhood where we live. Sure, all your usual haunts may be in the same area but sometimes its good to get out of our comfort zones and explore new areas. If you live in Hamra, go explore Bourj Hammoud or if you live in Gemayzeh, see what Verdun has to offer.
2. Meet friends for brunch or coffee
You may be used to hitting up the same cafe near to your apartment but be adventurous and try something different. Gather a couple close friends and pick a location to meet.
3. Watch a film at Metropolis
Metropolis in Ashrafieh always screens independent and European films or documentaries, not the mainstream stuff you can find at any other cinema. Although the venue usually only has two or three films to choose from, you'll definitely feel cultured after attending a screening.
4. Walk or bike on the corniche
It may be a bit cliche so let's make it more challenging. Start at one side and walk or bike the ENTIRE corniche. It's good exercise for one and two, you'll enjoy seeing the diversity you encounter as you tour the entire seaside route.
5. Have a picnic and take a nap in the Horsh or Sanayeh
Head over to one of Beirut's green spaces and spend the afternoon munching on snacks with friends. Bring a blanket so you can nap in the sun and some playing cards or a book to pass the time.
6. Hang out at the Sunday Market
You can find basically anything at the Sunday Market in Sin El Fil. Get lost among the stalls as you search for nothing in particular. Haggle with the vendors or just browse for fun.
7. Watch DVDs with friends
The great thing about Beirut is you can buy any DVD for less than $1. Get two or three and spend the afternoon on the couch getting way too wrapped up in the plot. Advice: Horror is always a good choice.
8. Take a bus somewhere and explore
For just a couple dollars or so, you can take buses all over beautiful Lebanon. Find the nearest bus station and just hop on to see where you'll end up. Just make sure you don't miss the bus heading back.
9. Find your way to the seaside and watch the waves
Whether you go to the seaside in Beirut or you go north or south to one of the beaches, you can spend a relaxing afternoon next to the sea. Bring a journal to write your thoughts or sketch.
10. Go to happy hour earlier than usual
It's Sunday. It's the weekend. You don't have any commitments, so why the hell not?
11. Enjoy bowling with friends
Look, even if you suck at bowling, sometimes that's half the fun. Just go to laugh and enjoy, don't take it too seriously. It's just bowling after all, not football.
12. Drive up to the mountains and lounge there until sunset
Grab that special someone – or a group of friends – and just head up into the mountains for the afternoon with no particular plan. Watch the clouds and the world pass by until you see the warm sun dipping below the horizon.
13. Find a pub that offers pool and darts
Darts and pool are great group activities, just make sure to hit the target.
14. Walk without a destination
Here's what you do, step out of your house, shut the door behind you and just start walking. You might be surprised what you find when you don't have a plan.
15. Sit in a cafe and watch football
Find a cafe full of football fans, order a shisha and enjoy the game. Remember to get overly excited every time your team scores.
16. Tour a museum
The recently opened Sursock Museum, the National Museum and the Beirut Art Center are all great options.
17. Do something creative
Whether it's painting, writing or making music, why not spend the afternoon working on a new creative project? Who knows, maybe it will turn into something great.
