Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Thursday that Facebook is launching the test of its solution for the absence of a "dislike" button, unveiling seven emoticons collectively called the "Reactions."
With Reactions, users will be able to express themselves through a variety of options other than the iconic "like" button, while these don't include a "dislike" option, they will allow users to react with “love,” “yay,” “haha,” “wow,” “angry” or “sad".
These emoticons, which will be accessed by clicking and holding down on, or hovering over, the "like" button, allow users to express emotions that can't always be conveyed through a "like", such as humor, awe and sadness, according to Zuckerberg .
"Not every moment is a good moment, and sometimes you just want a way to express empathy. These are important moments where you need the power to share more than ever, and a Like might not be the best way to express yourself," Zucherberg explained.
Reactions social media users ranged from applauding the idea for sidestepping the spread of negativity to thinking that emoticons aren't a suitable alternative to disliking a post.
"People who want a dislike button don't understand the concept or reality of cyber-bullying. This idea is definitely a better solution to expressing dismay instead of being able to hammer down people's ideas. Think about others than yourself for a little bit," wrote one Facebook user.
"Doesn't the angry button have just as much potential harm/negativity as a dislike button, or even more? Not only do I not like what you shared, but you make me angry! Not sure how that's positive," wrote another.
These are 13 other reactions to Facebook's "Reactions".
