Sept. 30 marked a historic day for Palestinians everywhere, as for the first time ever, the Palestinian flag was raised at the United Nations headquarters in New York City in its proper place alongside the other nations of the world. .

The motion to raise the flag was passed by the U.N. General Assembly at the beginning of September when119 countries voted for the motion, while only eight countries voted against it and 45 others abstained.

The ceremony was attended by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and coincided with the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
